Cloudview Day 5: The Food Bank and the Fall Fest

Quote of the day: "Manifest the cow jumping over the fence!" - Julie (our contact and main coordinator from Cloudview) Joke of the day: “What did the farmer say when he got hit? c-OW!” - Jason  Today was our final full day at the farm! It started out a chill morning as usual, with showers and breakfast and the lot. Once we got to the farm, we took the pumpkins that we picked the day before and scattered them into the pumpkin patch (essentially, reverse pumpkin-picking).  Then, a small trio (Max, Mariah, and Stella) split off and hung out with the little kids! Today, the wild spirit Chance and the less wild spirit Cori were at the farm. While we were hanging out with them, the rest of the group picked tomatoes and fed the animals. We realized that the kids were hugely impacted by our actions and they were learning from us, so we had to set a great example for them. :) The time we had with the kids was a great time for us to bond with each other and share memories that we will

Day 4: The Grand Coulee Dam and Pumpkin Patch

We went to the Grand Coulee Dam today. It’s a 550 foot tall dam that generates a massive amount of power. Our guide said one of the small generator blocks could power Seattle I think that it’s really interesting that there is a massive dam only a few hours from Seattle that's been producing way more than enough energy to power Seattle for more years than I’ve been alive. When we walked through the dam we were able to see the massive generator blocks and the axles rotating at high speeds . I thought it was really cool that I was able to walk through such an amazing structure and not be that surprised when it’s one of the biggest man-made structures in the world. It was very interesting to see the place that irrigates all the farmland we have been on and seeing for the past days. All in all it was a really amazing experience! -Max Today, before we went to the dam, we got to go to a pumpkin patch separate from Cloudview. At the pumpkin patch, we met a man named John, who spoke pas

Joke of the day: “Why did the farmer win a Nobel Award? Because he was outstanding in his field.” - Ian Today, when we went to the farm, we started by saying "hi" to our favorite adorable doggy, Barley. We divided into groups and then half went to have fun with the little kids, while the other half cleared a row of cucumbers, lemon cucumbers, and GIANT zucchinis. While we were doing that, the other group was doing crafts with the little kids. One of them for some reason really liked playing “Racing Cars'', a game in which people run until they faint. - Charlie After this we ate lunch, and then…  Emma...arrived in a storm of donuts and purple and cowboy hats. There she was. We tried to prank her by being creepy but it didn’t work because we all ended up smiling at her bubbly energy. Our group is finally complete. She also brought donuts which were super- good. -Nina Right after I (Emma) arrived, we drove around 50 minutes to another farm that the owner of Cloudview o

Quote of the Day: “cOnSUmE tHE mAGgOt” - Grayson Joke of the Day: What is a duck’s favorite ballet? The nutquacker. This morning, we woke up to cold air and a nice, warm breakfast to start off our day. Following this, everyone promptly packed our day packs and set out for the farm! With our 15 minute bus ride, we were reunited with our furry companions, Bun-Bun and Thumper. Of course, our day could not start without some good ‘ol hard work doing service. We contributed to the farm by helping them pull weeds and the old cucumber and melon plants. We helped sustain Cloudview’s CSA operation (community supported agriculture). CSA is when the community basically pays ahead of time, almost like an investment, but receives the subscribed food later. This helps smaller farms like Cloudview because it helps them have a consistent source of money. The relationship between the community and the farm keeps them from being bought out by bigger companies. As a group, we all felt inspired and refres

GSL Cloudview Day 1: Arrival!

Q uote of the day by Charlie B: "W hy do the turkey brains look like they’re on the outside?” Today, we drove for most of the day, and then arrived at our campsite! The tipis were extremely big, much bigger then everyone thought. After unpacking everything and doing a little tour of the campsite, we went over to Cloudview Farm, where we will be doing our service projects for the rest of the week. It was very pretty, and the animals were VERY awesome. First, we said hi to the cat, and then we looked at the baby chicks, and then we picked up the bunnies and brought them to a grassy area. The bunnies were VERY VERY fluffy and everyone loved petting them!! Holding them was especially fun . We then went over to the goats , who were extremely happy to see us. We fed them treats, and said hi to the chickens and turkeys! Julie, the Cloudview Farm's Education and Community Coordinator, gave us a lot of fresh produce from the farm, and we made some of that for our pasta dinner. We are
